How do I set up tax rates?

As a merchant, you might need to charge taxes on your sales, and then report and remit those taxes to the government. Although tax laws and regulations are complex and can change often, you can set up WebJaguar to automatically handle most common sales tax calculations.

WebJaguar doesn’t file or remit your sales taxes for you. You should always check with a local tax authority or a tax accountant to make sure that you charge your customers the correct sales tax rates, and to make sure you file and remit the taxes correctly.

To edit Tax Rates, visit Admin > Site InfoCountries (left column)

From here, you can input the tax rates for all states, counties, and cities within the United States. You can also configure taxes for the various Provinces/Territories in Canada.

Click on the writing pencil icon (indicated in image) to view and set up taxes for the counties and cities within the corresponding state (e.g., California). In the "Tax Rate" column, you can input the value of the percentage of tax for the area (e.g., "7.75" corresponds to 7.75 %). The setting for a location becomes the default tax rate for any sub-areas that it contains (e.g., all counties and cities in California will have a tax rate of 7.75 % by default), so you only need to change tax rates when they are different for sub-areas.

Note: It is recommended to consult with your accountant to make sure this is set up right.

FAQ

Q: How does the sales tax work and/or how is it calculated? Does it add the California Rate + County Rate + City Rate to get a total tax, or does the city tax rate overwrite the County and State rates if they are setup?

A: We have two options:

  1. We have a state table with tax-rate option that admin can enter. The tax will be calculated based on tax-rate mentioned by admin for that State. We have ability to drill down by county level and then to city level. City tax, if enabled, takes precedence, then county and then state tax-rate field.
  2. We have Avalara Tax, that need account with Avalara. Configuring avalara on Webjaguar site takes care of calculating State, County, and City tax, also have tax configuration based on shipping cost. An example of Avalara tax calculation for Orange, CA looks like below:

Line Number: x Line Tax: 1.59

    Jurisdiction: CALIFORNIA Tax: 1.32
    Jurisdiction: ORANGE Tax: 0.05
Jurisdiction: ORANGE CO LOCAL TAX SL Tax: 0.22

Q: Can I have different tax table configurations per multi-store?

A: Currently the tax rates you set from Site Info -> State Tax (on the left sidebar) and Site Info -> Countries (also left sidebar) on your main site are global implementations. Meaning that there is one tax table configuration that applies to your main site and all of your subsidiary multi-stores. We do not currently offer a solution for having individual tax tables configurable per multi-store.

Note: There is, however, one place that the global tax-rate can be overridden: on the individual customer account level. On the customer account page on the Admin panel near the bottom of the Customer Information tab you will see "Tax Rate" field in which you can input a flat tax rate (8.0, 7.2, etc.) that will override the global configuration just for that specific customer.
